Emerging technologies such as virtual, augmented and mixed reality (VR/AR/MR)  are increasingly capable and can further enhance data exploration, discovery, analysis and communication of results through intuitive and compelling visual and sensory interfaces. VR, AR and MR serve as transformational tools for science, engineering, education and beyond, and can provide innovative analysis and communication techniques to a variety of end users.

 This short video gives an overview of Navteca's R&D projects with VR for NASA Disaster Applications.

The Disasters Applications area promotes the use of Earth observations to improve prediction of, preparation for, response to, and recovery from natural and technological disasters. Disaster applications and applied research on natural hazards support emergency preparedness leaders in developing mitigation approaches, such as early warning systems, and providing information and maps to disaster response and recovery teams. Navteca has been experimenting with immersive VR and AR data visualization experiments to enhance the way disasters data is analyzed and communicated.

Navteca has created innovative climate visualizations for the NCCS by adapting the output of the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) Version 5 model to the 360 degree screen in the Oculus headset, providing the viewers with an unprecedented means with which to view the simulations.

Immersive Data Visualization with Virtual Reality: Stepping Inside Volumetric & 3D Data

Utilizing next generation technology, Navteca is exploring 3D and volumetric temporal data in Virtual Reality (VR,) taking users inside the data. No longer restricted by the edges of a screen, VR provides an innovative way of viewing spatially distributed 2D and 3D data that leverages a 360 field of view and positional-tracking input, allowing users to see more data at a glance.

Virtual reality content creation using Unity, Unreal, 3D assets, GIS data visualization and building models in VR, mobile and PC-based VR experiences for Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, HTC Vive, and mobile devices.
